Jerry:People work out to get in shape. But what are they getting in shape for? Nothing. They're not training for anything. You don't see these people at the Olympics. 'Oh look, there's a guy on the StairMaster, he's preparing for the Stair Event.' There is no Stair Event. They're just doing it to look good. But if you're not doing it for anything, why do you need to look good? Who are you trying to impress? You're alone on the StairMaster. The machine doesn't care what you look like.

Jerry:But they're disgusting items nobody would want

Jerry:You know what I think? I think there's a black market for gym clothes. Somewhere in the city, there's a guy selling used workout gear. 'Hey buddy, I got some sweatpants, barely worn. Still got that authentic gym smell. Top dollar.'

Jerry:We trust strangers with cars based on a jacket. A valet comes up, you give him your car. You're like, 'Here, take my car.' 'Oh, I have a jacket!' 'OK, take it!' That's all the qualification you need. A jacket. You could be a complete maniac. You could steal the car, crash it into a building, but as long as you have a jacket, we're good.

Jerry:We trust these guys with our cars. Multi-thousand dollar vehicles. We just hand them the keys. But god forbid they touch your jacket—you gotta get a claim ticket, sign forms, like you're checking nuclear weapons into a vault.

Jerry:I mean, it's just basketball. It's a game. But some people, they take it so seriously. Like their entire identity is wrapped up in whether they can make a jump shot. I'm watching these guys at the gym, and they're playing like it's the Finals. The Finals! It's Tuesday at 2 PM. Nobody's watching. There's no contract. There's no endorsement deal. It's just you, a ball, and a hoop that's slightly bent because someone dunked on it in 1987.

Jerry:You're a ball hog! You never pass the ball!

George:I'm not a ball hog.

Jerry:Yes you are. You hold onto that ball like it's made of gold.

George:Well, I never actually saw the ball.

George:You're a chucker! You just chuck the ball up there without any finesse, any technique.

Jerry:I'm a chucker? What does that even mean?

Jerry:You know what I hate? When you're in the locker room and a guy walks by completely naked, and he's got like a little towel, and he's not even trying to cover up. Just walking around like he owns the place. And then he stops to talk to you. Now we're having a conversation, and I'm trying to look at your face, but I'm also very aware that you're completely nude. It's awkward for both of us, but especially for me, because I'm the one who has to pretend not to notice.

Jerry:I didn't look.

George:I looked.

Jerry:Why do you look so upset?

George:My life is a mess. I'm broke, I'm single, I'm going nowhere.

Jerry:So what are you going to do about it?

George:I'm going to do the opposite of every instinct I have. If I think something will make me happy, I'm going to do the opposite.

Jerry:If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.

George:Yeah, I'm going to do it.

George:I looked.

George:But it was too fast.

Jerry:I don't want that information! I don't need that information!

Jerry:Why do people stretch in the locker room? You're already here. You already made the trip. Just get on the equipment like everyone else. But no, they gotta do these elaborate stretches, taking up space, blocking the mirror. 'Oh, I'm limbering up.' You know what? Limber somewhere else.

Jerry:Is that...? Oh my God, that's a celebrity!

George:Yeah, and they're a real person too.

Jerry:What? Of course they're a real person!

George:You know, I'd like to be a buff. You know, like Keith with the Civil War. I'd like to be a buff of something.

Jerry:What would you be a buff of?

George:I don't know. Buffaloes maybe.

George:I'm thinking about getting into shape. You know, really buff myself up.

Jerry:Buff? George, that's what you call it when you polish something. You're not a Cadillac.

George:What do you want me to say?

Jerry:I don't know, 'getting in shape,' 'working out,' something normal. Not 'buff.'

George:Well, what's wrong with buff?

Jerry:You want to be a Civil War buff? George, you can't even be a regular buff. You're not a buff of anything. You don't have the dedication. A buff has to read books, go to museums, watch documentaries. You won't even get off the couch to change the channel.

George:I'm going to go talk to him.

Jerry:George, you can't just go bother Keith Hernandez.

George:Why not?

Jerry:Because he's Keith Hernandez! You can't just walk up to Keith Hernandez and start talking to him like he's some guy at the coffee shop.

George:Keith's a big shot. He's got a corner office, he's got a secretary, he's got the respect of the entire office.

Jerry:So?

George:Baseball?!

George:Keith? Keith is a big deal. He's out there doing important things. What are you doing? You're making wisecracks for a living.

George:Keith is very important. He's the NUMBER TWO guy at the New York Yankees front office!

Keith:Jerry! I'm a huge fan of yours!

Jerry:Well, I appreciate that.

Keith:I was hoping maybe we could hang out. Get some coffee or something.

Keith:I really admire your career, Jerry. You're doing so well.

Jerry:So, how about that weather? You know what I was reading about? Plane crashes. Did you know that statistically you're more likely to die in a car accident than a plane crash? Yeah, but who's thinking about car accidents when they're sitting in a plane? Nobody. They're thinking about plane crashes. That's what I'd be thinking about. I'd be sitting there, the pilot comes on: 'We're experiencing some minor turbulence.' Minor turbulence? I'm thinking, 'That's it, we're going down. This is how it happens. This is the way I go.'

Jerry:You know what bothers me about plane crashes? They always say 'there were no survivors.' Why do they have to phrase it that way? That's what a plane crash is. A plane crash means there are no survivors. If there were survivors, it wouldn't be a crash, it would be a landing. 'Yeah, we had a little problem with the landing gear, but we all made it out fine.' That's not a crash.

Jerry:But they always have to say it: 'a small plane crashed today, there were no survivors.' Well, what did you expect? Did you think everyone walked away? Did you think they all got out, stretched their legs, and went to get a soda?

Jerry:And another thing - they say 'the plane was headed to Miami, but it never made it.' Of course it never made it. It crashed. That's the opposite of making it. If a plane crashes, the one thing we know for certain is that it did not make it to Miami.

Keith:So you're the chucker.

George:I don't know what you're talking about.

Keith:Yeah, you are. I can tell. You got that chucker look about you.

Jerry:I'm waiting for Keith to call me back. He said he'd call me back.

Jerry:It's been three hours. Why hasn't he called? What did I say? Did I say something wrong?

Jerry:Maybe he doesn't like me anymore. Maybe I misread the whole thing.

Elaine:You should call Keith.

Jerry:I can't call him. He has to call me.

Elaine:Why?

Jerry:Because if I call him, then I'm too eager. I don't want to seem desperate.

Elaine:So if you're on a date with a woman and she says she has a male friend, what do you do?

Jerry:Well, you have to assume the worst. I mean, that's what I do. I assume he's trying to sleep with her.

Jerry:You know what's crazy? Making friends as an adult. It's like dating, but nobody's trying to sleep with you. You just end up sitting across from each other at a diner going, 'So... you like cereal?' It's impossible. In high school, you make friends because you have to see each other every day. You're trapped together in biology class. Now? Now you have to actively schedule friendship. 'Hey, you free Thursday at 7? I'd like to hang out and establish a non-romantic bond.' It's weird. Jerry:You know what the problem with adult friendship is? It's like a job, except you don't get paid. And there are no new hires. I had a best friend in third grade named Danny. You know why? Because his house was near mine. That's the only criteria. We had nothing in common. He liked sports, I liked comic books. He had a dog, I was allergic to dogs. But every day after school, there we were. Best friends. Because geography.
